Historic Postcards

The Beginning of the Pier

This Postcard postmarked 1909 shows how different the beginning of Margate Pier looked at the turn of the 19th Century.  The Hotel Metropole and The Ship Hotel located to the right of the picture were demolished in the early 1940's for the Fort Road improvement scheme.

The original Droit Offices and the Margate Jetty are also shown. Land reclamation has since taken place infilling the area to the rear of the Droit offices which is now car park. To the left of the Ship Hotel the slipway to the beach can just be seen.

Cold Harbour

Postmarked 7th February 1915, the writer of this postcard remarks 'Isn't that a lovely wave?'.
The postcard shows the area known as Cold Harbour located between Fort Arcade and the Hotel Metropole. The building to the right of the picture is Harbour House which was the house from which J. M. W. Turner painted some of his watercolours of sunsets over the sea. The lifeboat station now occupies the site of the house.
