{"id":920,"date":"2014-07-02T14:45:20","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T14:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=920"},"modified":"2014-07-02T14:45:20","modified_gmt":"2014-07-02T14:45:20","slug":"vm_365-day-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=920","title":{"rendered":"VM_365 Day 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_944\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-944\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-944\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/VM-3-e1404309743953.jpg\" alt=\"Fragment of Romano-British mosaic\" width=\"600\" height=\"537\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fragment of Romano-British mosaic from Minster in Thanet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The image for our VM_365 project today is of a fragment of Roman Mosaic with part of a guilloche pattern that was found in the excavation of a <a title=\"Virtual Museum - Minster Roman Villa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/Virtual%20Museum\/3_Displays\/G6%20Displays\/Virtual_Museum_Gallery_6_Display_1_AbbeyFarm.html\">Roman Villa at Minster in Thanet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most impressive Roman buildings to have been discovered on the Isle of Thanet to date and almost certainly on of the most important places in the area in the Roman period.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-946\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-946 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/VM-3-1-e1404310014307.jpg\" alt=\"VM 3-1\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mosaic fragment in its storage container<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several of these small fragments of Mosaic from the excavation are in storage, but there were no floors of any size surviving in the excavated remains of the villa. The pieces we have survived because they had been broken up and had fallen into a deep chamber within the northern apse of the building.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-948\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-948 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/2001_0101_000620AA-e1404311533949.jpg\" alt=\"2001_0101_000620AA\" width=\"252\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This architectural model is one of our attempts to show what the building was like in one of its major periods of use.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It is useful to try to reconstruct the shape and size of the Villa building with its main range, wings and detached bath house building, which was served by its own piped water supply.<\/p>\n<p>With only the ground plan visible from the robbed remains of walls it is difficult to know exactly what the structure of the building was like, but with the few mosaic fragments we have, we can at least assume that like other buildings of the period it had several of these grand decorative surfaces.
