{"id":849,"date":"2014-04-15T15:19:59","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T15:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=849"},"modified":"2014-04-15T15:19:59","modified_gmt":"2014-04-15T15:19:59","slug":"history-and-archaeology-day-at-upton-school-broadstairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=849","title":{"rendered":"History and Archaeology Day at Upton School, Broadstairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Trust were invited back to Upton School in Broadstairs on Wednesday 26th February for a day of archaeological activities for the school\u2019s History day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_866\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-866\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-866 \" alt=\"Teaching about the equipment of ta Roman soldier\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Adam_teaches_2.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"206\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teaching about the equipment of a Roman soldier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Adam and Lauren of the Trust ran four sessions on the archaeology of the Roman period over the day, starting with an overview of the history of Roman settlement in Britain and an experience of the everyday life of the Roman soldier, the first of the Roman people to arrive in Kent.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_858\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-858\" style=\"width: 88px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-858 \" alt=\"Picture of a weary young Roman legionary\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/weary_soldier-146x300.jpg\" width=\"88\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-858\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A weary Roman legionary<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Volunteers from among the children didn\u2019t just get a taste for the commitment to long service, but also had a sense of the gruelling routine of marching in full armour and a pack full of equipment; an experience that has been compared to carrying one of your friends around on your back with the weight of a frozen chicken on your head.<\/p>\n<p>The archaeologists explained how the evidence for our understanding of Roman life is gathered from the remains that are left behind, and what a wide range of equipment to excavate, record and then report discoveries is needed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_855\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-855\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-855 \" title=\"Finding out about archaeological equipment\" alt=\"Children finding out about archaeological equipment\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Lauren_teaches.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"186\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-855\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finding out about archaeological equipment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eventually it was time for the children to Dig and Discover for themselves, excavating an artefact then carrying out their own analysis of the find using one of the Trusts specially designed recording sheets. Each of the junior archaeologists could have a first-hand experience of their Roman past from the real Roman objects that could be investigated and drawn.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_857\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-857\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-857 \" title=\"Learning about Roman artefacts\" alt=\"Learning about Roman artefacts\" src=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Learning-300x127.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"127\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learning about Roman artefacts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t just the Roman period that got the archaeological treatment, our Anglo-Saxon skeleton activity and costume were put to use by the teachers.
