{"id":655,"date":"2013-09-23T19:16:55","date_gmt":"2013-09-23T19:16:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=655"},"modified":"2013-09-23T19:16:55","modified_gmt":"2013-09-23T19:16:55","slug":"mini-grips-in-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=655","title":{"rendered":"Mini-grips in use"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-656\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-656 \" alt=\"Sorting the sherds of Roman roughcast beaker pottery\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/sorting_roughcast_beaker.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"194\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sorting the sherds of Roman roughcast beaker pottery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As promised here is a photo of the mini-grip bags from our most recent <a title=\"wishlist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/registry\/registry.html?ie=UTF8&amp;id=3NL3TYSC11FEP&amp;type=wishlist\">wishlist<\/a> donation in use to bag up the pieces of three fine Roman roughcast beakers found among the soil backfilling a deep a well at the <a title=\"Abbey Farm Roman Villa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/Virtual%20Museum\/3_Displays\/G6%20Displays\/Virtual_Museum_Gallery_6_Display_1_AbbeyFarm.html\">Abbey Farm Roman Villa<\/a> at Minster in Thanet.<\/p>\n<p>These delicate sherds of thin walled pottery, coated on their outer surface with rough grits, are the remains of three fine cups which stood on a small circular pedestal.<\/p>\n<p>The beakers were imported to Britain in the Roman period and are made in Argonne beaker fabric, Cologne Colour-coated whiteware and Central Gaulish Colour-coated whiteware, dating between the 2nd and 3rd century AD.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_658\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-658\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-658 \" alt=\"Repackaging the beakers for storage\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/repackaging_roughcast_beaker-250x300.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-658\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Repackaging the beakers for storage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The roughcast beaker fragments were found among the larger and heavier fragments of thick walled jars and bowls from the same deposit.<\/p>\n<p>We have picked out these finer vessel fragments from the group found in the well so they can be used for teaching and displays in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Now they will be able to travel more comfortably without being crowded by their chunkier friends, thanks to the donation of these bags.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As promised here is a photo of the mini-grip bags from our most recent wishlist donation in use to bag up the pieces of three fine Roman roughcast beakers found among the soil backfilling a deep a well at the Abbey Farm Roman Villa at Minster in Thanet.
