{"id":3096,"date":"2015-05-22T17:00:32","date_gmt":"2015-05-22T16:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=3096"},"modified":"2015-05-22T17:00:32","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T16:00:32","slug":"vm_365-day-327-the-treasury-st-johns-church-margate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=3096","title":{"rendered":"VM_365 Day 327 The Treasury, St John&#8217;s Church, Margate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3136\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/VM-327.jpg\" alt=\"VM 327\" width=\"600\" height=\"796\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s image for Day 327 of the VM_365 project shows the Treasury which was constructed on the north east corner of the <a href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=3090\" target=\"_blank\">parish church of St John the Baptist, Margate which featured on Day 324 of the VM_365 project.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This single storey addition to the church was constructed around 1500 AD from coursed Ragstone and incorporating a crenellated parapet and traceried windows.\u00a0 The Ragstone is a distinctly different building material to the rest of the church and was shipped in from the Maidstone area; the rest of the church is constructed mainly of flint which was easily obtainable locally.<\/p>\n<p>Although originally built to be the church treasury, for the storage of the church&#8217;s valuables, this structure was later adapted to store shot and gunpowder for the town fort and was also used by the Churchwardens to administer poor relief for the parish.
