Today’s image for Day 229 of the VM_365 project shows an Anglo Saxon sunken featured building, which was excavated during a Watching Brief on a pipeline at Sarre in 1991.<\/p>\n
Sarre is perhaps better known for its extensive Anglo Saxon cemetery which has featured in many of our posts (Day 19<\/a>, 33<\/a>, 34<\/a>, 35<\/a>, 116<\/a>, 117<\/a>, 119<\/a>, 120<\/a>, 142<\/a>, 147<\/a>, 149<\/a>, 150<\/a>, 151<\/a>, 152<\/a>, 153<\/a> and 227<\/a>) but to the east of the cemetery near the abandoned Perkins Chalk pit, this contemporary settlement evidence was discovered.<\/p>\n The Sarre structure was rectangular in plan measuring 3 metres by 4 metres and\u00a0 0.4 metres deep and was cut into the chalk geology.\u00a0 Two opposing postholes were located at either end of the central axis of the cut.\u00a0 A shallow ledge is visible along one long edge, suggesting the possibility that a planked floor was supported by it.<\/p>\n A discussion of the function of Sunken Feaured\u00a0 Buildings has previously featured in VM_365 along with a description of a similar building found at Margate on Day 83<\/a>.<\/p>\n Although only one structure was observed during this work, other evidence of Anglo Saxon settlement\u00a0 is likely to survive in the surrounding fields waiting to be discovered.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Today’s image for Day 229 of the VM_365 project shows an Anglo Saxon sunken featured building, which was excavated during a Watching Brief on a pipeline at Sarre in 1991.
