{"id":2321,"date":"2015-02-02T19:10:56","date_gmt":"2015-02-02T19:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2321"},"modified":"2015-02-02T19:10:56","modified_gmt":"2015-02-02T19:10:56","slug":"vm_365-day-218-roman-painted-plaster-from-broadstairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2321","title":{"rendered":"VM_365 Day 218 Roman Painted Plaster from Broadstairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2351\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/VM-218.jpg\" alt=\"VM 218\" width=\"600\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s image for Day 218 of the VM_365 project shows a selection of the painted plaster fragments from the <a title=\"VM_365 Day 44 The Romans at Broadstairs 1\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1222\" target=\"_blank\">Roman building at Stone Road, Broadstairs<\/a> which was excavated in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 49 fragments of painted plaster were found in an extensive demolition deposit concentrated in the north west corner of the building, suggesting that the structure was a high status house.<\/p>\n<p>Painted plaster in an extensive range of colours and styles has been excavated at the Villa site at Minster in Thanet,\u00a0 with some of the fragments featuring in a series of previous VM_365 posts on<a title=\"VM_365 Day 178 The Running of the Deer\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2025\" target=\"_blank\"> Day 178, <\/a><a title=\"VM_365 Day 182 Marble effect Roman painted plaster\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2033\" target=\"_blank\">Day 182<\/a>, <a title=\"VM_365 Day 185 Roman painted plaster inspired by nature\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2039\" target=\"_blank\">Day 185<\/a>, <a title=\"VM_365 Day 188 More painted plaster from Minster \u2013 Artist(s) unknown\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2051\" target=\"_blank\">Day 188<\/a> and <a title=\"VM_365 Day 191 Candelabra design Roman Painted Plaster\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2045\" target=\"_blank\">Day 191<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although there are fewer fragments from Stone Road, and are generally much smaller than those at Minster,\u00a0 they show a wide range of panel designs painted in hues of blue and green as well as\u00a0 black. Some have suggestions of natural designs, with the third fragment from the left in the bottom row possibly representing a flower painted with blue pigment.<\/p>\n<p>The excavated part of the building also contained a <a title=\"VM_365 Day 73 Roman Bakers Oven at Broadstairs\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1442\" target=\"_blank\">Bakers oven<\/a> suggesting that the painted rooms were in another part of the range of buildings. Other artefacts recovered from the Stone Road Roman building\u00a0 have featured as posts on VM_365, including part of a<a title=\"VM_365 Day 23 Roman Spoon\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1039\" target=\"_blank\"> Roman spoon<\/a> and a Military style <a title=\"VM_365 Day 215 Roman military buckle from Broadstairs building\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=2330\" target=\"_blank\">belt buckle. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s image for Day 218 of the VM_365 project shows a selection of the painted plaster fragments from the Roman building at Stone Road, Broadstairs which was excavated in 2004.
