{"id":1975,"date":"2014-12-10T17:51:14","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T17:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1975"},"modified":"2014-12-10T17:51:14","modified_gmt":"2014-12-10T17:51:14","slug":"vm-365-day-164-earliest-iron-age-red-oxide-painted-pottery-from-minnis-bay-birchington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1975","title":{"rendered":"VM 365 Day 164 Earliest Iron Age red oxide painted pottery from Minnis Bay, Birchington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/VM-164.jpg\" alt=\"VM 164\" width=\"600\" height=\"613\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s image is of a sherd of Earliest Iron Age pottery with a bright red finish applied to its outer surface.\u00a0 Around 900 BC, in the earliest phase of the Iron Age, a new technique was adopted by potters where\u00a0 vessels were decorated by applying\u00a0 iron-oxide powder as a slip to the outer surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Like the <a title=\"VM_365 Day 155 Ghosts of other things preserved in Bronze Age pottery decoration\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1921\">finger tip decoration\u00a0 that was applied to bronze age on vessels that was shown on VM_365 Day 155, this technique is a skeuomorph<\/a>, using the inspiration of one decorative form as a reference to create another decorative style. \u00a0 The\u00a0 process evolved with the deliberate intention of\u00a0 emulating the bright colour of freshly made and polished bronze vessels.<\/p>\n<p>The technique was only applied on thin-walled fineware bowls, which were most ike the bronze models.
