{"id":1802,"date":"2014-11-13T20:45:44","date_gmt":"2014-11-13T20:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1802"},"modified":"2014-11-13T20:45:44","modified_gmt":"2014-11-13T20:45:44","slug":"vm_365-day-137-two-beaker-sherds-from-lord-of-the-manor-ramsgate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1802","title":{"rendered":"VM_365 Day 137 Two Beaker sherds from Lord of the Manor Ramsgate"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1803\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1803\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/VM-137.jpg\" alt=\"Two Beaker sherds from Lord of the Manor, Ramsgate.\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two Beaker sherds from Lord of the Manor, Ramsgate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Toady&#8217;s image for VM_365 Day 137 is of two admittedly small, but important pottery sherds of <a title=\"Virtual Museum Beaker Gallery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/Virtual%20Museum\/2_Galleries\/GBeaker%20Content\/GBeaker_Intro.htm\">Beaker vessels<\/a>,\u00a0 like the\u00a0<a title=\"VM_365 Day 136 Ramsgate Late Neolithic Grooved Ware sherd\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1798\"> Grooved Ware sherd from Day 136<\/a>, the two Beaker sherds were found together in the 1976 excavations at Lord of the Manor, Ramsgate.<\/p>\n<p>The sherds are from Phase 2 of the development of the Lord of the Manor 1 monument, a period of Early Bronze Age activity associated with the re-use of the earliest ring ditched enclosure as a burial site. In this phase a burial was placed within a smaller ring-ditch that was cut inside the circuit of the earlier <a title=\"Causewayed Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/Virtual%20Museum\/3_Displays\/G4%20Displays\/Gallery4_Display4_Link2thanet_Link3causewayed.htm\"> large causewayed enclosure ditch<\/a>, to create a <a title=\"Round barrows\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/Virtual%20Museum\/3_Displays\/G4%20Displays\/Gallery4_Display4.htm\">round barrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The smaller sherd on the left of the image is decorated with a cord impression, which would have extended over the whole body of the vessel. The second sherd on the right is decorated with a pattern in zones, created with impressions from the teeth of a comb.<\/p>\n<p>The first cord impressed style is the earliest, dating between c.2300-200 BC. The second comb decorated sherd is marginally later, around 2100-1900 BC. Both sherds are made of an identical fine oxidised fabric, with a fine silty fabric matrix and fine crushed pot grog tempering. Both have a similar neat, finely executed\u00a0 decoration and so can reasonably be thought of as contemporary vessels.<\/p>\n<p>Both sherds were found in a small pit, located\u00a0 outside the ditch enclosing the central burial.
