Iron Age Spindle Whorl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1664\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/VM-114.jpg\" alt=\"VM 114\" width=\"600\" height=\"716\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s image is an Iron Age ceramic spindle whorl found at Ebbsfleet, near Ramsgate in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Spindle whorls such as these\u00a0 were used when spinning by hand and placed on a spindle to add weight to help maintain and increase the speed of the spin needed to turn wool into yarn\u00a0\u00a0 Spindle whorls, along with other objects associated with cloth making such as loom weights and <a title=\"VM_365 Day 110. Iron Age Weaving Comb\" href=\"http:\/\/thanetarch.co.uk\/journal\/?p=1626\">weaving combs<\/a> are commonly found on Iron Age sites.<\/p>\n<p>This spindle whorl was found on the surface of a layer interpreted as a hut floor.
